Jehovah Nissi: The Lord Our Banner

And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord Is My Banner, 16 saying, “A hand upon the throne of the Lord! The Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation (Exodus 17:15-16 ESV).”

What does it mean to call on the name of the Lord? Do you have a religious idea of what it means, or do you have a day to day experience of it? Put it in the context of having kids. You’re tooling along in your day and all of a sudden you hear this big cry “Mom I need you” or “Daddy come quick.” All it takes is to hear your child call for help and you are there! We are God’s children and He is both our Father and Mother. He hears and responds when we call on Him with childlike faith.

The first time you call on the name of the Lord is when you believe and confess Him as your Lord. That is the moment in time you are forgiven in Christ and born again with God’s divine life. To call on the Lord is to open up your mouth and let it rip! People hear you and God does too! You are not ashamed of the gospel of Christ.

The Lord reveals Himself to us through His names. We know Him as Jehovah Rapha, our healer, Jehovah Jireh, our provider, and Jehovah Nissi, the Lord our banner. When you need healing call on Him as your Healer. If you know Him as healer, you can receive healing. If you know Him as provider, you will trust in His provision.

Jehovah Nissi is the name you call on when you are in a spiritual battle. The devil is roaming around taking note of whom he can devour. He attacks you with fear and doubt. If you take the bait the battle that will ensue can be fierce. Position yourself under the Lord’s flag. Go into battle shouting out His name and victory will come!
